Black light produce ultra violet light. What exactly is ultra violet light? Remember ROYGBIV that you learned about in high school. The acronym for red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, and violet. Ultra violet light is any color in the spectrum that is above violet. We call it black light.
What you see glowing under a black light are named phosphors. Black light is not visible to the naked eye but it sure does create some pretty cool effects when those phosphors get excited by a black light and begin to glow. The effects of black lights are useful for a lot more things than just making white t-shirts glow funny colors.
